It was great to hear yesterday that it looks like we are going to keep Kerr.  My hope is that he really wants to play.  He is a great player and if he can get at least 15 games under his belt he could easily win a Brownlow.  Also good news about Scotty Burns.  Me thinks that this is an interesting appointment!  They obviously know something I don’t with him being untried and straight out of playing???  Oh well bring on trade week.  Will be interesteing to see who we get for Seaby!

Just about to hop on a train with Pete Roberts, Katie G and Eboni headed to Kalgoorlie.  We will be facilitating a youth ministry unit (YV and Acom) with a great group of local youth leaders.  Really looking forward to connecting with the crew there.

Please pray for WILDLIFE this week!  We have over 40 young people signed up with way over thirty everyday.  Pray for Emily and the crew as they lead.  If you want something to do on Friday please give me a yell because we are short a few leaders.  (free day at Adventure World!)

Well that’s it for me, bless you!

A bit of an Update

Well sorry for the lack of communication lately!  It’s been a pretty full few weeks.  I will dot point a few things that have been happening;

  • I am officially an Arrow Leadership Graduate.  Feels pretty good to have finished something like this.  We had an awesome week of input, encouragement, fun and empowerment.  I have had he privilege of getting to know some pretty awesome people over the 2 years. Hopefully we can stay in touch.  I will try to post some photos soon
  • Congratulations to Adam Cooney a worthy Brownlow Medalist.  He was pretty funny hey especially when he told us that he gave his girlfriend a burger ring when he proposed.
  • West Coast’s votes were pretty poor.  Lets hope we recruit well keep Kerr and get Ben back!  (I know it will never happen!)
  • The Kal Road trip is not that far away now.  Really looking forward to it.  4 of us are heading across on the prospector.  Let us know if you would like to come.
  • Who’s gonna win the Grand Final?  I’m gonna go for the Hawks!  Would love to see them get up for Crawf!
  • Below is a picture of Grand Final week 2005.  The year when we were supposed to get blown up by those terrosts on trial in Melb at the moment.  Also the year Leo Barry destroyed my dreams… Mongrel!

Repentance and Leadership

Wayne Cordeiro

It’s not a secret anymore, but it will remain a poignant lesson for years to come.

It was just after a rousing evening service in 2006 where the worship was powerful and the sermon was stirring. A pastor is accused of soliciting drugs, and for that and the allegation of homosexuality, he would soon be let go by the board. Ted Haggard of New Life Church lived a double life, and religious postures and eloquent words were not a substitute for unresolved inner inconsistencies. All during the wonderful worship and challenging sermons, something was out of place.

“Although they fast, I will not listen to their cry; though they offer burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them. Instead, I will destroy them …” (Jeremiah 14:12)

As leaders, we are good at leading services, emceeing programs, and making speeches that can motivate people. We can arrange activities for small groups, all night prayer meetings, and all congregational fasting. We put together mission programs and preach moving sermons, as the church would require.

But what does God require more than these? The prophet Micah in 6:8 tells us:

The LORD has told us what is good. What he requires of us is this: to do what is just, to show constant love, and to live in humble fellowship with our God.”

Who I am in the shadows rather than in the footlights is what God measures.

Israel and Judah had fallen away from God, and when God asked them to repent, they chose not to. After a refusal to repent, the next step is not going to be absolution. The next step is consequences; for Judah, it would extend over the next seventy years. The defining moment of repentance either opens the door, or closes it, to God’s healing and restoration. Hudson Taylor, the great missionary to China, used to greet his friends with these words, “Have you repented yet today?”

I guess he knew the power of repentance, for a repenting leader is a growing leader; a repenting church is a healthy church.

I have noticed that the leaders that God has used in mighty ways in the past have been adept in repentance! In Numbers 14:5, we find these words: Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces in the presence of all the assembly of the congregation of the sons of Israel.” It seemed as if they were always the first ones to repent because they understood the power of repentance and that following repentance is always grace and wisdom. But with the refusal to repent, the next step is always consequence.

Genuine leaders are good at repentance!

We often have the wrong definition of repentance. We have been raised to believe that if we repent, it is a value statement meaning that we are weak. It makes us vulnerable and somehow we think it relegates us to the consolation bracket in ministry and life. Shame teaches us that humiliation before our peers has to be the worst thing in life. But in actuality, repentance is making the switch to realizing that looking good before God is far more important than looking good before people.

And let’s be reminded that the result of repentance is not looking bad in front of people. It is healing, restoration, and wisdom. However, the next step after a refusal to repent is consequences, and for Israel, it was seventy years of consequences in Babylon.

Allow me to repeat: “Repentance is making the switch of realizing that looking good before God is more important than looking good before people.”

This has to be one of the most crucial realizations I can make in my lifetime.

So, repentance is what I choose. I will be quick to repent. I will even practice it today. I am good at giving eloquent reasonings, but not as good at repentance. I need practice.

A Leader’s Prayer:

Dear Father,

How I stand before You is more important than how I stand before people. Thank you for helping me to lead others from a clear heart so that leading people is a natural result of following You.

Well footy this year for me has been pretty uneventful thing because we are still recovering from the impact of Judd-ass Iscariot (unfortunately he is still my favourite player!) as well as all of the off field issues.  Unfortunately this has affected the on field.  Or it could just mean that we are not good enough.  I can’t remember a longer season and there is still 2 games to go.  There is also a lot of speculation re Kerr.  I wish someone would come out and put it to bed.

As for the Googs saga.  I guess i have tried to avoid saying to much because i really feel for him and his family.  The depth in which he has decieved us is mind blowing and i feel that this will have massive ramifications upon the Australian church and again Christian Leadership.  The other side of it is that something like this really forces me to think about my journey and faults.  It’s so easy to pick up the stone but i find myself standing with the crowd, dumb founded after having just heard Jesus say “if you are without sin, have a go!”
I also think that we need to have a real good look at the ‘hero worship’/cultural thing in our churches and have a converstaion about a way forward.  Mark and Scott make some great comments on these issues.

In fact there has been a lot of really good comments posted and i have tried to bring some of the good ones together for you as you seek to gain some understanding in it all.

  • Scott Vawser Youth Vision Coach makes some really good comments here
  • Mark Conner Senior Pastor at City Life in Melbourne here
  • Mark Sayers Culture and Faith Commentator here

The great thing in it all is that we serve a redemptive God who is and has been since the begining time in the business of redeeming our bad decisions.

God Bless you!  Pray for each other and your leaders.

An Olympic Funny

My wife saw this on sunrise this morning.  I chuckled!

A bit of an Update!

Sorry for the lack of communication (Michael).

Here is a very quick summary of what’s on the radar at the moment;

  1. Looking forward to Leaders Retreat this weekend.  We have most of our crew going which is excellent.  I’m really excited about just being with my leaders and hanging out with the other great leaders from around the state.
  2. Sue Vawser started as our new Youth Administator.  She will be in the office on Wednesdays 9a-2.30p.  She brings a wealth of experience and is committed to youth ministry.  She is married to Clint and has two amazing kids, Hannah and Tyler.  The interesting thing about Sue is that she was one of my awesome youth leaders when I was a teenager.  Good to have you back Susy!
  3. Some of you might be saying well what does that mean for Cat!  Well Cat will move to an honorary position which will free her up to be a little more fluid in her approach to youth min.  We are looking at the possibilities of her being more involved with the worship and creative arts as well as have a real focus on reaching the girls at Penrhos.  Thank you Cat for your committment to youth and we look forward to what God has in store next!
  4. Into the second week of ‘Blokes’ with a group of young men from Como.  It has in my oppinion been very good.  The guys never cease to amaze me.  The level of depth already achieved in 2 weeks has been great.  BTW ‘Blokes’ is a Scripture Union small group mentoring program for young men.  Speak to the crew at SU or give me a yell if you want more info.  Apparently after having a chat with the principal at Carey, Rowan Clark who happens to be a good mate, says that it going really well there too.

Well that’s a bit of an update!
Can i leave you with this verse from

Hebrews 3:7 So, as the Holy Spirit says:
”Today, if you hear his voice,
    8do not harden your hearts

Keep your Heart soft!

God Bless

A bit of an Update!

The dead whale on our beach!

The dead whale on our beach!

  1. So there it is.  Not something that you see everyday!  My estimate is that it was about 15m long!
  2. Just returned from beautiful Sydney.  Our main purpose in going was to connect with all of the other Youth Vision State Directors. (Stephen Peach YVQLD, Stephen Parker YVQLD, Scott Vawser YVWA, Neale Merridith YVVICTAS, Brenton YVVICTAS, Gavin Jones YVSANT and Brooke YVNSW.  We also had another dude there from Church of Christ publishing, Craig.  The crew that used to write and print the Australian Christian.  Some of the things that we discussed were as follows, what are the states up to, youth min training, national state youth games, the next study tour and the national chair.  It was a good productive time.
  3. We then went to a conference done by the Sydney Anglicans.  It was pretty good.  The best thing about it was a message given by a guy called Fry (UK).  He spoke about kids and youth min out of Psa 78.  It was brilliant.  Basically encouraging us to intentionally raise up our youth in the ways of God!

That’s it for now!  Go Eagles!

Ash Hansen

On Saturday I celebrated my 33rd birthday, went with Rowan and the kids to a WAFL reserves game, the sun shone all day and the Eagles did me proud.  Stu and I really enjoyed the win with 34 000 other loyal supporters but what blew me away was what happened at the end of the game.

For the last 7 years I have been a member of West Coast.  I have seen many wins at Subi and not once did the boys go anywhere near the crowd.  One of the boys would give away the footy and the rest of them would go to the 4 corners of the centre square and clap the crowd.  Now don’t get me wrong at least they acknowledged us!

However during the last 7 years I have felt that the boys should’ve gone a bit further.  Then I started noticing other AFL clubs especially the Melb based teams get right up to the fence and really celebrate their win with their supporters.  Over time I have become more and more envious.

Well on Saturday my birthday, the boys encouraged by Woosha embraced their fans.  Ash Hansen and Priddis came to our end of the ground and high fived everyone along the fence it was a beautiful thing.  The elderly ladies in front of us who by the way make wonderful cookies and cupcakes (thanks Bert!) said to us that it was the first time in 20 years.  WOW!

Well i think we may have begun to shake that awful untouchable tag!  We have certainly been humbled this season but I was stoked by their performance on the weekend.  Lots to look forward too and makes for a very interesting derby this weekend.

A bit of an Update!

G’day Everyone,

Sorry for the lack of info lately.  I’m having a bit of a break!

  1. We’ve been down south.  I absolutely love it down there!  We did a bit of work on the house.  Lot’s of quad biking.  The pot belling that the Watson’s donated works an absolute treat.  Warms the whole house.  Ta Neale and Tan!
  2. One morning we went fossicking along the beach collecting plastic and stuff after the storms.  We also came across the carcase of a dead whale.  It would’ve been at least 15m.  Massive big thing.  We wondered why it had died?  Will post a photo if I can!
  3. We bought the hillsong cd and I rate it!  Some fantastic songs especially, Healer, This is our God and the last song, Everything!
  4. Just working on my car now and the house!
  5. Looking forward to seeing everyone and trust you are all well?

God bless!

Last night I watched the last 2 hours of the Corby saga, “Hidden Truth.”  Like most docos that claim to present the truth, they always leave you with more questions than answers.

Anyway I came across this website and I’m wondering whether it’s for real?http://www.schapellecorbytours.com/

I must admit feeling quite ill reading through this.
Whatever the truth is (and lets hope that it comes out) no human being should be exploited and treated like a zoo animal!
